Super Awesome Space Zoomer

Solo Developer Motion Sim Racer
Project Overview
  • Developed a flight racing game for a DOF Reality Motion Simulator Chair
  • Used Unreal Engine's Blueprints & C++ to create a high-speed racing experience
  • Created a high-score board with "ghost" replay features
  • Utilized Git for version control and development tracking

This is a project I created as a learning experience to understand how to develop for a DOF Reality Motion Simulator Chair. This game was not developed for virtual reality. It was designed to be played on a large TV or monitor in front of a motion chair.

The game uses Sim Racing Studio, an external program which receives telemetry information through UDP packets and moves the motion simulator chair accordingly. So, I created custom flight movement controls and calculated telemetry information such as acceleration, rotation, and velocity. Every tick, the telemetry data is sent to Sim Racing Studio, which moves the chair.

The flight controls went through quite a few revisions as I got feedback from my coworkers. As you might see in the video, there are Thrustmaster controllers (joystick, pedals, & throttle) attached to the chair. My initial plan was to create one control scheme that utilized the joystick, foot pedals, and throttle. However, everyone that play-tested the game preferred to just play with an Xbox controller. I realized that it's likely because the Thrustmaster controllers are designed for flying planes, while the controls in my game feel akin to flying something like a drone. It feels much more natural with a game controller, so that became the winning control method. Nonetheless, I kept the option to use the joystick, throttle, and pedals for anyone willing to try.

My favorite feature of the game is the high score board. As I was developing this game, I regularly had my coworkers play-testing the controls, the movement feel, and the race tracks. Soon, we were competing heavily over first place. To fuel that competitive fire, I implemented automatic "recording" of player movement, which also saves to the leaderboard when a new high score is set. You can choose to race alongside the recorded movement of any player on the scoreboard (or all of them at once).
